The following is an excerpt from the print book "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers" written by Dorothy Rainwater and Judy Redfield.
Frank M. Whiting Company History:
Frank M. Whiting, son of William D. Whit-ing, founder of the Whiting Mfg. Co. had been associated with his father in that company. Prior to 1878 he left the company and formed the firm of Holbrook, Whiting & Albee, which began the manufacture of silverware in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. In 1878, Frank M. Whiting bought out his two partners and continued business under the firm name of F.M. Whiting & Co.
In 1881 his father, William D. Whiting, became a partner, the firm name remaining the same until his father's death in 1891, when it was changed to F.M. Whiting. The following year Frank M. Whiting died and the business was continued by his widow, mother and two sisters.
In 1895 it was converted into a stock company under the name F.M. Whiting Co. About 1940 it became a division of the Ellmore Silver Co. which went out of business c. 1960. The sterling flatware dies were bought by the Crown Silver Co., New York. It is believed that they are no longer being used.
Action brought by the Whiting Mfg. Co. against the F.M. Whiting Co. in 1896 resulted in F.M. Whiting agreeing to change their name to Frank M. Whiting & Co. The suit was to restrain the defendant company from using a griffin trademark which testimony showed led to confusion with the the Whiting Mfg. Co. trademark.
